A company is only as good as the people it keeps.

 

Great companies are developed with great people in mind, following efficient processes that engage their customers every day.

Those that have great staff retention often have great cultures that engages people. Introducing new players to a business means a new face, with new ideas. The induction process is essential to your culture and processes. Here are my top 10 tips to starting a new team member so they never forget their first day.

 

 

  1. Before they start, give them your company handbook and ask them to read it prior to them arriving, this will explain your culture before they start and will also show you if they can follow important requests.
  2. On the day of arrival, take a photo of them, it is a good moment for them and a great advert for you, 10 years later the foresight will reward you.
  3. Send flowers or wine to their partner or parents on the day they start, remember you are in this for the long haul as they are, involving the family is a great touch, which they will never forget.
  4. Ask them to start at 11am, rather than when the doors first open, it is a busy time in the morning and first impressions count, being asked to sit in the corner while you finish the morning meeting isn’t a good look.
  5. Make the whole team aware of their arrival, they are going to be nervous, making new team member feel welcome sets the foundations of your culture.
  6. Ensure the business owner(s) welcomes new team member, depending on the size a call will do but in person is much better.
  7. Hand their business cards to them on their first day, it a great touch for them.
  8. Ensure you are legal and ask them for their ID and license on the first day, it will reinforce your professional business culture.
  9. Nominate a buddy in the business that they can go to so they can ask questions.
  10. Probably one of the forgotten points, but really important, Tell your IT team they are arriving, they are often the first point of call, being asked who they are and not being on their records puts a big downer on your hard work and delays their induction programme.

Bonus activity that will help them become the local property expert:

 

• Hand them a questionnaire that needs to be completed to help build their local knowledge, such as where are the secondary school located and who is the Head Teacher, important roads that we love to list properties, train times and the charges to get you places, the essential to help them become the local expert.
